5 Shopping Tips For You to Shop in Singapore

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

1. Bring more credit cards. Almost all boutiques and malls here accept credit cards. So if you want to shop happily, make sure that you bring along a few types of cards such as American Express, VISA, MasterCard and Diners.

2. If you are using cash, make sure to change money at licensed money changers. You can find a lot of money changers along the street of Singapore. Go to a few shops and look at their exchange rates before you change your money.

3. Goods and services in Singapore will be taxed 7%. Currently the GST is 7%. This means that there will be an additional 7% charges on top of the retail price for your goods and services. Sometimes, the GST is not reflected on the price tag. So make sure that you check the price before checkout.

4. If you are not shopping in malls, make sure to ask for the price before purchasing. Prices are fixed when you shop in malls like Tangs, Takashimaya and Suntec City. But for other places like Bugis Street and flea markets, the prices are not fixed. So, always bargain with the seller to try and get a good price. You never ask, you will never know.

5. Visit Singapore between May to June. This is the period where GSS will be held. There are crazy discounts everywhere and you should take advantage of this. If you cannot make it during this period, you can visit Singapore either during January for Chinese New Year sale or end of the year for Christmas sale.

The favourite pastime of Singaporeans is shopping. This is because Singapore is a great shopping destination, with more than 200 shopping centres and malls. Every years, many tourists flock to Singapore. Although their initial intention is to see the sights in this small island, somehow they always end up with a few shopping bags.

In Singapore, there are certain periods when you can get island-wide discount on goods. One such period falls in June when the Great Singapore Sale (GSS) takes place. During GSS, you can get goods at incredibly low rate, up to 80% discount! Therefore, if you are planning to visit Singapore, try to schedule your trip in June.

There are many shopping centres in Singapore, and the few famous ones are located along Orchard Road. Orchard Road is the best place to shop. You can get all kinds of goods there, such as cosmetics, branded goods and electronics. And the best part is that there is always sale going on somewhere. So make sure that you walk the entire stretch of Orchard Road to discover those bargains.

If you are an electronic fanatic, you should visit the most famous place to shop for electronic goods – Sim Lim Square. Over at Sim Lim Square, you can find all sorts of electronic goods, such as computers, hand phones, and plasma TV. For tourists, you will enjoy tax-free privileges. Just present your receipts at the counter after your purchase to receive your tax rebates.

If you want to shop for traditional Chinese goods, you should visit Chinatown. One thing to note when you are shopping at Chinatown is to always bargain with the sellers. Do not take the initial price. Always negotiate and see whether you can get a better deal out of it.

Last but not least, it is very convenient for you to find money changers in Singapore. Before you change your money with any money changer, be sure to compare the currency rates between a few changers to get the best deal. If you do not want to go through the hassle of changing money, you can always use credit cards which are accepted by almost all major shopping centres and outlets.
